Teaching (even Math!) Online:
For (Experienced, Successful) Beginners
Presenters: Steve Gilbert, Dale Parker, Beth Dailey, and others
Description
Can math be learned in online courses? Do you know someone who is worried and skeptical about beginning to teach online?
We plan to assemble some online resources and develop guidelines for a few modules that might help students learn online some of the basic concepts and skills of college-prerequisite algebra. With this focus, we can not only help these learners, but we can also help those responsible for teaching and supporting college-prerequisite algebra courses. Finally, by demonstrating some effective online ways of meeting the notational, conceptual, and emotional challenges of learning algebra, we will also help many faculty and academic support professionals.
We focus on the growing group of faculty who have taught successfully in “traditional” classrooms and who are pressed to “move online.” They are justifiably worried about how well they will be able to teach (and how well their students will be able to learn) when they begin to teach online, or to add more online components to their “traditional” courses. Many of them worry that many skills and ideas, important to the courses they have been teaching previously, cannot be taught easily and effectively online. We hope to reassure them that some of their own pedagogically challenging course topics can be taught and learned effectively online by demonstrating how to do so with a few similarly important and difficult topics central to algebra.
