Improve Students’ Metacognition
Structured Peer Teaching for Learning and Problem Solving
Presenters: Steve Gilbert and Lucy MacDonald, M.A. M.A. Faculty Emerita Chemeketa Community College, Salem, OR.
Description:
Lucy MacDonald worked with the authors of the book "Problem Solving and Comprehension, seventh edition by providing the applied exploration of problem solving theory with community college students to see what worked and what wasn't working. Through this work it was discovered that students needed help with metacognition and in order to do so, needed to split the process into two roles. Lucy will explain this approach and we will have an opportunity to experience it.
In addition to reviewing the work of Arthur Whimbey, Jack Lochhead and Ron Narode, authors of "Problem Solving and Comprehension" you may want to also check out Lucy's Math blog It includes links to TAPPS “Thinking Aloud Pair Problem Solving," full text of book and several articles.
