Frugal Innovation: Colleges Sharing Online Courses

In response to tighter budgets, increased enrollments, and greater pressures, might institutions consider sharing courses as Frugal Innovation? The TLT Group is investigating whether this possibility is politically tolerable, logistically feasible, financially viable, and educationally desirable.

In this FridayLive!, Steve Gilbert and guests will discuss these questions and share suggested guidelines for such a collaboration: 
  • How could a few colleges or universities each benefit from collaborating to enable their own enrolled undergraduates to take some of each others' courses? 
  • What could be done by each institution to encourage and enable their own students to take courses in which the lead faculty member is based on one of the other distant campuses - too distant for face-to-face meetings?   
  • How can students who participate in such courses online not feel disenfranchised if some other students can participate in the same course face-to-face on campus?   
  • In what ways must the arrangements differ for students who participate only or primarily a.  online,  b.  from the same campus as the lead instructor, c.  from other campuses?
  • What strategies, tools, and services would be especially helpful to enable stakeholders from each participating institution to benefit from this kind of collaboration with the other institutions? 
  • What kinds of courses are most likely to be shared successfully in this way?
  • How can each participating institution encourage, enable its own faculty and staff to take fuller advantage (find/import/adapt/use) underutilized available resources to which they are already entitled?
