III.  Crisis, Self-Deception, and Online Education

"Necessity is the mother of futile dodges" - Alfred North Whitehead [1]

“Necessity is the mother of self-deception” - Steven W. Gilbert [2]

We are all susceptible to wishful thinking and self- deception. It can result from external pressures and self- doubt. It can lead either to rash action or to passivity – especially when making major technology decisions in difficult times.

We want to believe that the most immediately available and easily conceived forms of online education can support looming school and college re-openings.

Who has the time and courage to question? Prepare for anything short of full success?

IV. Self-Deception and Democracy

“Lying in Politics: Hannah Arendt on Deception, Self-Deception, and the Psychology of Defactualization” Maria Popova, [3]

“No matter how large the tissue of falsehood that an experienced liar has to offer, it will never be large enough … to cover the immensity of factuality.”
