When you first started hearing about the promise of digital technologies such as personal computers, the Internet, the Web, clickers, streaming video and the like, were you excited? Did you think it could lead to a huge improvement of teaching and learning? Ever use the word ‘revolution’ to describe your long term hopes?

For Steve Ehrmann, Director of the TLT Group’s Flashlight Program, those hopes date back to the late 1960s when he was in high school, taking his first programming class. As a student at MIT, an evaluator at the Evergreen State College, as a program officer making grants for innovative projects, and for the last 12 years with the TLT Group, those hopes for long term, major improvement in higher education have persisted.  But the nature of those goals and strategies have changed dramatically.

Have some of your beliefs about the possibilities for improvement changed?  Which beliefs have remained the same?

Since mid-August, Ehrmann has been posting mini-essays each week on the TLT-SWG blog. (For a map and summary of those posts, see  Each Monday, Steve summarizes a widely held idea about the reasons for using technology, or about how to use technology to improve teaching and learning. And later each week, he describes what he now believes instead.

There have already been over 1300 visits to this list of provocative posts. Many of you have added your own observations.  Please join the conversation!  On Friday, October 23,  at 2 PM ET, join us for a free hour of FridayLive conversation about “Ten Things I (no longer) Believe about Teaching and Learning with Technology..”.  Steve Ehrmann and Steve Gilbert will discuss a few of these controversial arguments, and there will be plenty of opportunities for you to join in.  If you can, bring a headset with a microphone; otherwise you can use the chat window to contribute, if you like.  What are some of the most dramatic ways in your beliefs about the “what, why and how” of educational uses of technology have changed??

PS.  After registering, if you have a moment, please help us plan the session on Friday by answering two questions in this survey right now. Thanks!

Don't forget that you can register for a FridayLive! FASTPASS.  This enables you to attend FridayLive! every session without registering.
