Leaders: Mike Keppell, Charles Sturt University, Phil Long, University of Queensland, and Steve Ehrmann, TLT Group Vice-President.
This webinar will consider the design of learning spaces in higher education. The first part of the webinar will focus on physical learning spaces. Major stakeholders of physical spaces (architects, facilities management, departments or faculty) have different perceptions and expectations of spaces. Considering the stakeholders, each has a set of expectations, concerns, as well as expertise and resources to contribute to the question of designing and sustaining a new learning space or renovating an existing one. The second part of the presentation will focus on blended and virtual learning spaces. A major issue in the design of spaces is a neglect of stakeholders in relation to accounting for the complementation of physical, virtual and blended learning spaces for learning and teaching in higher education. The need to mirror contemporary learning and teaching strategies that emphasize independent and peer-based learning in both physical and virtual learning spaces together with how students perceive and utilize space in higher education settings will be explored. The third part of the presentation will demonstrate how to apply these ideas to the evaluation of traditional and non-traditional learning spaces. We will suggest how to create learning spaces that assist faculty who want the flexibility to make simple, or dramatic, changes in teaching and learning.
